Swing kids. Teaching some 40 teenagers to dance is challenging, but Annie Irizari, Anita McBride and Marie Stoffer of our USA Dance chapter pulled it off last month at a lesson that was originally supposed to happen nearly two years ago in those simpler, pre-Covid times. Our three experienced dancers taught swing basics to a group of kids (and a few adults) from a local church (faces are blurred because they are underage). “Some were truly interested, and they were trying,” Annie said, noting that the group was made up of “truly beginner beginner” dancers. “We had some parents there, but they too wanted to learn and they too were challenged with corralling the adolescents.” Annie said another lesson may be in the cards — and she would welcome another volunteer or two to help. Thanks to Annie, Anita, and Marie for spreading the gospel of dance!
We’ve got two reasons to celebrate at our next dance, 3 – 5 p.m. Sunday, June 19, at Enchantment Dancing, 337 San Pedro Dr. NE. It’s a Member Appreciation Dance, which means USA Dance members get in for free. (Non-members pay the usual $10 admission fee.) And it’s Father’s Day, so all Dancing Dads are…
Our next USA Dance — this Sunday, April 2 — features a lesson that’s been three years in the making.
Susan and Gary Kellogg were originally scheduled to teach a Night Club Two-Step lesson in March 2020. But that dance never happened — it was our first casualty of the coronavirus pandemic. So we’ve invited them back to finish what they never got a chance to start.
Sunday’s dance is 3 – 5 p.m. at the Albuquerque Square Dance Center, 4915 Hawkins St. NE. Doug McClellan will DJ. The Kellogg’s Night Club lesson starts at 2:15 p.m.
Please join USA Dance for our next dance on Friday, Aug. 13, from 7 – 9 p.m.
Admission is $5 for everyone. We are returning to Enchantment Dancing, 337 San Pedro Dr. NE (between Lomas and Central).
Enchantment owner Chip Hindi will teach a free lesson at 6:15 p.m.
Spend a rocking and rolling New Year’s Day with USA Dance! Our first dance of 2023 will be 3 – 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, at our new(ish) venue — the Albuquerque Square Dance Center, 4915 Hawkins St. NE.
We’ll play an upbeat selection of rock ’n’ roll classics and covers to get the year off to a lively start, from Chubby Checker to Creedence, the Stones to Springsteen, and the Beatles to the B-52s.
Our last dance of the year is 3 – 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, at Enchantment Dancing, 337 San Pedro Dr. NE. A free tango lesson starts at 2:15 p.m. Perry Pedersen will DJ. Admission is $5 for USA Dance members and $10 for others. Dancers no longer need to show proof of a Covid-19…
