It’s a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta … Sunday at USA Dance!

Join USA Dance for our Cinco de Mayo dance fiesta this Sunday, May 3.

The dance is 3 – 5 p.m — but come early for our lessons, which are included in the admission price.

All lessons will focus on merengue, a popular and fun dance that’s based on walking.

“Everyone can dance merengue at a dance party,” said Rosie Harper,  chapter president. “Beginners can keep up because of the simple footwork. Advanced dancers can challenge themselves to create a ‘pendulum’ effect by compressing their knees.”

The dance will also feature a merengue snowball mixer.  It starts with a few couples, and at a signal each dancer recruits a new partner until everyone is on the  floor.

The lesson schedule is:

1:45 p.m.
Line Dance lesson: Merengue, led by Rosie Harper

2:15 p.m.
• Basics lesson (small hall): Merengue, led by Marie Stoffer
• Int/Adv lesson (large hall): Merengue, taught by Brenda Lamon

Andy Nelson is our DJ, and the soon-to-be-famous Mexicali Roses will perform!

Our venue is the spacious Albuquerque Square Dance Center, 4915 Hawkins St. NE, which boasts the largest and nicest wooden dance floor in town.

Admission for all of the lessons and dance is just $5 for USA Dance members and $10 for others.

All social dancers are welcome — no partner required. See you on the dance floor!

Ginny Beres captured this nice photo of Lawrence Black giving his student, Marie Stoffer, a hug. Lawrence and Marie performed a Viennese Waltz routine at our last dance.
