Vote with your (dancing) feet … Sunday at USA Dance!

This image is from a 1953 instructional book on rumba, which also advised dancers to “Leave cigarettes and pocket book at your table before dancing.”

Sunday’s dance (Dec. 3) is also our general membership meeting, where we will be electing new members to our chapter’s board of directors. The dance is 3 – 5 p.m.

Come early for an American rumba lesson at 2:15 p.m., taught by Charity Tafoya. Perry Pedersen will DJ.

We’re at the Albuquerque Square Dance Club, 4915 Hawkins St. NE. Admission is $5 for USA Dance members and $10 for others.

Board elections. Four candidates are running for open seats on the board of directors. They are, in alphabetical order:

• Laurel Fanninghas been dancing since 1998, and competing with her husband, Tom, as an amateur couple since 2003 with USABDA, the predecessor to USA Dance. They’ve competed at USABDA/USA Dance regional competitions and at Nationals. Both Laurel and Tom served on the board of the Denver USABDA chapter in the 2000s. They started dancing again in 2022 after a long hiatus raising a family. Laurel is a project manager for construction development.

• Tom Fanning, a materials engineer, started dancing in 1996. (See Laurel’s bio above for more information about Tom’s dance background.)

• Ruth Horowitz has been dancing for 12 years and was a show jumping judge for 5 years.

• Perry Pedersen, one of our DJs, has been dancing socially since he was 25. He has competed in amateur and pro-am events and once served as a dance host aboard the Queen Mary. Perry also served as a board member and teacher for “Dancing Classrooms.“ He’s managed professional work teams of up to 200 employees, and co-founded and taught at a Polish business college.

Remaining on the board for another year are John Cilke, Annie Irizari, Rosie Harper, and Debra Williams. See you on the dance floor!
